Structure in the Memoir and Personal Essay

The itch to write begins with an anecdote or an experience you want to share, a memory or an image, a question or an idea you want to explore. But what’s next? Where should you start? How should you proceed? How do you decide what to include and what to leave out when your brain is teeming with so much stuff?

Your material itself provides the clues. In this interactive half-day workshop, we’ll analyze the work of master writers to uncover a sampling of the many structures available to memoirists and essayists. You’ll learn and practice strategies to help you recognize the form that your own work wants to take. And you’ll go away with resources and exercises to further your own writing practice.

While this workshop is intended primarily for writers of creative nonfiction, it might also be useful to poets and fiction writers.
